What is a Kundli?

A Kundli is a map of the sky at your exact moment of birth. It shows the positions of all 9 planets across 12 houses and 12 zodiac signs - the foundation of Vedic astrology readings.

9 Planet Positions

All Navagrahas with exact house and sign placements, degrees, and retrograde status.

Lagna & Ascendant

Your rising sign at birth, which determines all 12 house placements in your chart.

Nakshatra Details

Your birth star (Janma Nakshatra) and Pada, with Vimsottari lord details.

Kundli (Janam Kundali) Explained

A Kundli (also called Janam Kundali, Janam Patri or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place you were born. It records which of the 12 zodiac signs was rising in the east (the Lagna) and where each of the nine Vedic planets, the Navagrahas, was placed. Every Vedic astrology reading, from marriage matching to dasha predictions, starts from this chart.

Our free Kundli maker calculates the chart with the Lahiri ayanamsha and shows it in your choice of North Indian or South Indian style, together with your Lagna, Janma Nakshatra and a full table of planetary positions.

How to Read Your Kundli

Step 1: Find the Lagna

The Lagna is the 1st house. In a North Indian chart it is always the top centre diamond. In a South Indian chart look for the box marked "Asc" or "Lagna". The sign in that house describes your body, temperament and the general direction of your life.

Step 2: Count the houses

From the Lagna, count the houses anti-clockwise in the North Indian chart, or clockwise through the signs in the South Indian chart. Each house governs specific areas of life:

HouseSanskrit nameArea of life
1Tanu BhavaSelf, body, health, personality
2Dhana BhavaWealth, family, speech, food
3Sahaja BhavaCourage, siblings, skills, short travel
4Sukha BhavaMother, home, property, vehicles, peace of mind
5Putra BhavaChildren, intelligence, romance, past merit
6Ari BhavaHealth issues, enemies, debts, service
7Kalatra BhavaMarriage, spouse, partnerships
8Ayu BhavaLongevity, sudden events, inheritance, research
9Dharma BhavaLuck, father, guru, higher learning
10Karma BhavaCareer, status, reputation
11Labha BhavaIncome, gains, friends, wishes
12Vyaya BhavaExpenses, foreign lands, sleep, moksha

Step 3: See which planets sit where

A planet colours the house it occupies. Jupiter in the 7th house, for example, is traditionally good for a wise and supportive spouse, while Saturn in the 10th shows a career built slowly through discipline. Also note the sign each planet is in: planets in their own or exaltation sign act more strongly.

Step 4: Look at the Moon and your Nakshatra

Vedic astrology gives great weight to the Moon. Your Moon sign (Rashi) is used for transits and Sade Sati, and your Nakshatra sets the starting point of your Vimshottari dasha and is used in matching.

Why Birth Time Matters So Much

The Lagna moves through all 12 signs in about 24 hours, so it changes roughly every two hours, faster for some signs and slower for others. A difference of even 10 to 15 minutes can move the Lagna into the next sign near a boundary, which changes every house in the chart. The Moon also moves about half a degree per hour, which can change your Nakshatra pada. Use the time on your birth certificate where possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Kundli really free?

Yes. The birth chart, Lagna, Nakshatra and planetary positions are free with no sign-up. If you want written predictions, dashas and remedies, you can optionally order a detailed PDF report.

What details do I need to make a Kundli?

Your date of birth, exact time of birth and place of birth. The time is the most important input, because the Lagna (ascendant) changes roughly every two hours and the house positions depend on it.

What is the difference between North Indian and South Indian Kundli?

They show the same information in different layouts. In the North Indian (diamond) chart the houses are fixed and the sign numbers move. In the South Indian (square) chart the signs are fixed and the Lagna is marked in whichever box it falls.

What is Lagna in Kundli?

Lagna, or the ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It becomes the 1st house of the chart and sets the order of all other houses.

Can I make a Kundli without birth time?

You can see the planets' signs and your Moon sign, but the Lagna and houses will not be reliable. If you are unsure of your time, check your birth certificate or hospital record before relying on house-based predictions.

Which ayanamsha do you use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsha, the official standard of the Indian government's Rashtriya Panchang and the most widely used in India.
