What is Mangal Dosha?

In Vedic astrology, Mars (Mangal/Kuja) is a powerful and aggressive planet. When placed in certain sensitive houses from the Lagna (Ascendant), it can create imbalances in marriage and partnerships - this condition is called Mangal Dosha. It is commonly checked before marriage.

Mangal Dosha (Kuja / Manglik Dosha) Explained

Mangal Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha, Chevvai Dosham or Manglik Dosha, is one of the most discussed factors in Indian marriage matching. It is formed when Mars (Mangal), the planet of energy, anger and drive, sits in a house of the birth chart connected with marriage, family or longevity. Traditionally it is said to cause arguments, delays or stress in married life if not matched or remedied.

Our calculator finds the exact position of Mars in your chart and checks the dosha from three reference points: the Lagna, the Moon and Venus.

Which Houses Cause Mangal Dosha?

Mars in houseArea affectedTraditional intensity
1stTemperament and self: impatience, dominanceModerate
2ndFamily and speech: harsh words, family frictionModerate
4thHome and peace of mind: unrest at homeMild
7thSpouse and partnership: conflicts, ego clashesStrong
8thLongevity and in-laws: sudden upheavalsStrong
12thBed comforts and expenses: dissatisfaction, lossesMild

Some North Indian traditions do not count the 2nd house, while South Indian astrologers usually include it. Our calculator follows the six-house rule and shows the intensity so you can judge.

Cancellation of Mangal Dosha

Before calling someone Manglik, astrologers look for conditions that cancel or reduce the dosha. The most commonly applied are:

  • Mars in its own sign, Aries or Scorpio, or exalted in Capricorn.
  • Jupiter conjunct Mars or aspecting it, or Mars joined with the Moon.
  • Both partners have Mangal Dosha of similar strength.
  • The dosha appears only from one reference point (Lagna, Moon or Venus) and not the others.

Mangal Dosha is common and is only one factor. A Manglik result is not a reason to panic. Look at the full chart, the 7th house, Venus, the dashas and the Guna Milan score with a qualified astrologer before making decisions.

Traditional Remedies

  • Worship Lord Hanuman on Tuesdays and recite the Hanuman Chalisa.
  • Chant the Mars mantra "Om Angarakaya Namaha" 108 times on Tuesdays.
  • Perform a Mangal Shanti puja or Kuja Dosha Nivarana puja before marriage.
  • Donate red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery or red cloth on Tuesdays.
  • In some communities a symbolic "Kumbh Vivah" is performed before the actual marriage.

How to Use the Mangal Dosha Calculator

  1. Enter the date, time and place of birth. The time matters, because the Lagna and so the house of Mars depend on it.
  2. You see whether Mars creates dosha from the Lagna, from the Moon and from Venus, plus an intensity level.
  3. Check your partner too, then compare with our Kundli Matching tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mangal Dosha?

Mangal Dosha (also Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha) is formed when Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the birth chart. It is traditionally believed to bring friction or delays in marriage.

How common is Mangal Dosha?

Very common. Six of the twelve houses can give it, so roughly half of all people have Mars in one of these houses from the Lagna. This is one reason astrologers apply cancellation rules before calling someone Manglik.

Does Mangal Dosha get cancelled?

Classical texts list several cancellations. Common ones are: Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn), Jupiter or Venus aspecting or joining Mars, and both partners having Mangal Dosha. An astrologer should check these in your full chart.

Does Mangal Dosha end after age 28?

This is a popular belief rather than a classical rule. Many astrologers say the effects reduce with maturity, but the dosha in the birth chart does not disappear at a fixed age.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Yes, many such marriages are happy. Traditionally the dosha is matched by a partner who also has it, or reduced through remedies and a careful look at both charts. Kundli matching and the overall strength of the 7th house matter as much.

Why do you check from the Moon and Venus too?

Mars is also judged from the Moon (emotions) and from Venus (relationships). If the dosha appears only from one point, its effect is considered milder than when it appears from the Lagna, Moon and Venus together.
