Rahu Kalam Meaning and Why It Is Avoided
Rahu Kalam is a daily window of roughly 90 minutes that is considered inauspicious for starting anything new. It is one of the most widely checked timings in South India, and many families look it up before a puja, a journey, a property registration or a new business. The period is ruled by Rahu, the shadow planet linked with confusion, delays and unexpected obstacles.
Our calculator gives the exact Rahu Kalam for your date and city, together with Yamagandam, Gulika Kalam and the two auspicious windows of the day, Abhijit Muhurta and Brahma Muhurta.
How Rahu Kalam Is Calculated
- Find the local sunrise and sunset for the date and place.
- Divide the daytime into 8 equal parts. On a 12-hour day each part is 90 minutes; in winter it is shorter and in summer longer.
- Pick the part for the weekday: Monday 2nd, Saturday 3rd, Friday 4th, Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th, Tuesday 7th, Sunday 8th. A popular memory aid is "Mother Saw Father Wearing The Turban Suddenly" (Mon, Sat, Fri, Wed, Thu, Tue, Sun).
Because sunrise changes with season and location, Rahu Kalam on the same weekday can differ by 30 minutes or more between Delhi and Chennai, and between June and December. That is why a fixed printed chart is only approximate.

What to Avoid and What Is Fine
Usually avoided
Starting a business or job, signing contracts, buying property, gold or a vehicle, starting a journey, engagements, griha pravesh and other ceremonies.
Fine to continue
Work already in progress, routine office and household tasks, emergencies, medical care and travel that cannot be postponed.
Good for
Many people use Rahu Kalam for prayers to Goddess Durga or for Rahu shanti, since worship is not considered a "new beginning".
Auspicious Times: Abhijit and Brahma Muhurta
Abhijit Muhurta
Abhijit is the 8th of the 15 muhurtas of the day and falls around local noon, lasting about 48 minutes. It is considered strong enough to support most new beginnings when no better muhurat is available. Tradition does not use Abhijit Muhurta on Wednesdays, and our calculator marks this.
Brahma Muhurta
Brahma Muhurta is the 48-minute window that ends 48 minutes before sunrise, roughly 1 hour 36 minutes to 48 minutes before sunrise. It is recommended for meditation, prayer and study.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Rahu Kalam?
Rahu Kalam (also written Rahu Kaal or Rahukalam) is a period of about one and a half hours every day that is ruled by Rahu. Traditional Indian practice avoids starting new and important work during this time.
How is Rahu Kalam calculated?
The time from local sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. Rahu Kalam is one fixed part for each weekday: the 2nd part on Monday, 3rd on Saturday, 4th on Friday, 5th on Wednesday, 6th on Thursday, 7th on Tuesday and 8th on Sunday.
Why is Rahu Kalam different in my city?
Because it depends on local sunrise and sunset. Chennai, Delhi and London all have different sunrise times, and day length changes through the year, so the exact Rahu Kalam changes with place and date.
What should I not do during Rahu Kalam?
Traditionally people avoid starting a new business, signing agreements, buying a house or vehicle, beginning a journey and holding ceremonies like engagements. Routine work that is already in progress can continue.
Is Rahu Kalam observed at night?
In most traditions Rahu Kalam is only counted for the daytime, from sunrise to sunset. Some astrologers also use a night Rahu Kalam, but it is rarely followed for daily planning.
What is the difference between Rahu Kalam, Yamagandam and Gulika Kalam?
All three are one-eighth parts of the day. Rahu Kalam and Yamagandam are avoided for new beginnings. Gulika Kalam is different: actions started in it are believed to repeat, so it is avoided for funerals or paying off loans but some consider it fine for buying things you want more of.
