Kundli Matching (Kundli Milan)
Check Vedic marriage compatibility using Ashtakoot Guna Milan. Enter birth details of both partners for an instant score out of 36.
What is Ashtakoot Guna Milan?
The traditional Vedic method of marriage compatibility that evaluates 8 factors (Kutas) based on the Moon's Nakshatra and Rashi. Maximum score is 36 - above 18 is generally acceptable.
What Is Kundli Matching?
Kundli matching, also called Kundli Milan or Guna Milan, is the traditional Vedic method of checking marriage compatibility. The most widely used system is Ashtakoot, which compares eight factors (kootas) from the two partners' Moon signs and Nakshatras and gives a score out of 36 gunas.
Our calculator works out both birth charts from the exact date, time and place of birth, finds each person's Moon sign and Nakshatra, and scores all eight kootas with a short explanation of each.
The 8 Kootas and Their Points
| Koota | Max points | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Spiritual compatibility and ego, based on the Moon sign |
| Vashya | 2 | Mutual attraction and influence between partners |
| Tara | 3 | Birth star compatibility: health and well-being after marriage |
| Yoni | 4 | Physical and instinctive compatibility, from the Nakshatra animals |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Mental wavelength: friendship between the Moon sign lords |
| Gana | 6 | Temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa nature |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Emotional bond, family welfare and finances, from Moon sign distance |
| Nadi | 8 | Health and progeny; the most important koota |
| Total | 36 |
The points grow from 1 to 8, so the later kootas carry more weight. Nadi (8), Bhakoot (7) and Gana (6) together make up more than half the total.
How to Read Your Guna Milan Score
| Score | Traditional view |
|---|---|
| Below 18 | Not recommended without detailed analysis by an astrologer |
| 18 to 24 | Average, acceptable match |
| 25 to 32 | Good match |
| 33 to 36 | Excellent match |
A good total does not override a serious dosha. Two charts can score 28 and still have Nadi Dosha, while a 20-point match with no dosha and strong 7th houses may be very happy. Use the score as a starting point, not a final verdict.
Important Doshas in Matching
Nadi Dosha
Each Nakshatra belongs to one of three Nadis: Adi (Vata), Madhya (Pitta) or Antya (Kapha). When both partners share the same Nadi, the Nadi koota scores 0 and the match has Nadi Dosha. You can see your Nadi on the result of our Nakshatra Calculator.
Bhakoot Dosha
Bhakoot looks at how far apart the two Moon signs are. Positions of 2-12, 5-9 and 6-8 from each other give Bhakoot Dosha and 0 points. All other positions give the full 7 points.
Gana Dosha
A Rakshasa gana partner with a Manushya gana partner scores 0 for Gana. Deva with Rakshasa scores very low. Same gana scores the full 6 points.
Mangal Dosha
Mangal (Kuja) Dosha is not part of the 36 points, but most families check it alongside Guna Milan. Check both partners with our Mangal Dosha calculator.
Tips for Accurate Matching
- Use the exact birth time for both people. A Moon close to a Nakshatra or sign boundary can change Tara, Yoni, Gana, Nadi and Bhakoot.
- For births outside India, set the correct timezone, including daylight saving if it applied.
- Enter the boy's details as Person 1 and the girl's as Person 2. Varna, Vashya and Tara are counted in a specific direction.
- For a final decision, have an astrologer also review the 7th house, Venus and the running dashas of both charts.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many gunas should match for marriage?
Out of 36 gunas, a score of 18 or more is traditionally considered acceptable. 18 to 24 is average, 25 to 32 is good and 33 to 36 is excellent. A high score alone is not enough, though; astrologers also check Nadi, Bhakoot and Mangal Dosha.
What is Nadi Dosha?
Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya). It scores 0 out of 8 and is traditionally linked with health and progeny concerns. Classical texts list exceptions, for example when both share the same Rashi but different Nakshatras, so consult an astrologer before rejecting a match on this alone.
What is Bhakoot Dosha?
Bhakoot Dosha arises when the Moon signs of the couple are in a 2-12, 5-9 or 6-8 position from each other. It scores 0 out of 7. It is cancelled in some cases, such as when both Moon signs are ruled by the same planet or by friendly planets.
Can Kundli matching be done by name only?
Name-based matching uses the first syllable of the name to guess the Nakshatra. It is far less reliable than matching with actual birth details, because many names do not follow the naming syllable. Use date, time and place of birth wherever possible.
Does Guna Milan check Mangal Dosha?
No. Ashtakoot Guna Milan and Mangal Dosha are separate checks. Use our Mangal Dosha calculator for both partners as well.
Is this the North Indian or South Indian method?
This calculator uses the Ashtakoot (8 koota, 36 point) system common in North India. South India often uses the Dashakoot (10 porutham) system, which overlaps with it but scores differently.
