Shatabhisha Nakshatra: Traits, Padas, Career, Marriage and Remedies

Shatabhisha Nakshatra symbol, an empty circle of a hundred stars with Varuna rising from the ocean

Shatabhisha Nakshatra means “a hundred physicians” or “a hundred healers”, and it is also known as Shatataraka, “a hundred stars”. It is the twenty-fourth Nakshatra and lies entirely in Aquarius. Its deity is Varuna, the Vedic lord of the cosmic waters and of hidden truth, and its ruling planet is Rahu. In the south it is called Chathayam or Sadayam. Shatabhisha natives are often independent thinkers, private by nature and drawn to healing, research and anything that reveals what is hidden.

This guide covers Varuna’s role, the empty circle symbol, men and women of the Nakshatra, its four padas, career patterns, compatibility, muhurta and remedies. These are tendencies; the full chart and the condition of Rahu and Saturn decide how they work out.

Varuna: the keeper of hidden truth

In the oldest layer of the Rig Veda, Varuna is one of the greatest gods: the guardian of Rita, the cosmic order, who sees everything that people do and binds wrongdoers with his noose. Hymns to Varuna are among the most personal in the Veda, with worshippers confessing their faults and asking for release. In later tradition, Varuna becomes the god of the oceans and the waters, but he keeps his link with oaths, justice and the truth that lies beneath the surface.

This gives Shatabhisha a serious, searching quality. Natives often care about truth and fairness, dislike hypocrisy and can be private about their own inner life. Varuna’s oceans are deep and mostly hidden, and Shatabhisha natives often have depths that even close friends do not see. The same link with hidden things draws many of them to research, medicine, psychology and the occult.

What the empty circle means

An empty circle encloses space and protects what is inside it. It suggests boundaries, containment and the healer’s circle that keeps illness out. It can also suggest emptiness and solitude, the space a person needs to think clearly. Shatabhisha Nakshatra natives often need time alone and can feel drained by constant company.

The “hundred healers” and “hundred stars” in the name point the same way. Healing in Indian tradition often meant a hundred different remedies, herbs and methods, and Shatabhisha is linked with medicine, alternative healing and the search for cures. The hundred stars suggest a wide, scientific view, and many natives are drawn to astronomy, physics or technology.

Personality

Strengths

  • Independent thinking. Shatabhisha natives form their own views and resist group pressure.
  • Healing ability. Many are drawn to medicine, therapy and helping people recover.
  • Scientific mind. Aquarius and Rahu give curiosity and an interest in research and technology.
  • Honesty. Varuna’s influence gives a strong sense of truth and fairness.
  • Self-sufficiency. They can work alone for long periods and solve problems on their own.

Challenges

  • Secrecy and reserve. They may keep their feelings hidden, even from those close to them.
  • Loneliness. The need for solitude can turn into isolation.
  • Stubbornness. Independent views can become inflexible ones.
  • Pessimism. Seeing hidden problems can lead to expecting the worst.

Shatabhisha Nakshatra men and women

Shatabhisha Nakshatra men are traditionally described as truthful, intelligent and principled, often interested in science, medicine or philosophy. They can be reserved and may only open up to a few people. Many find their stride in their thirties or later.

Shatabhisha women are described as independent, capable and thoughtful, often with an interest in healing, science or social causes. They value their privacy and freedom and tend to do well in careers that let them work with some autonomy. Both men and women of this Nakshatra usually appreciate partners who respect their need for space.

Rahu’s role and your first Mahadasha

Shatabhisha Nakshatra is ruled by Rahu, so natives begin life in the Rahu Mahadasha, which lasts eighteen years in full. Jupiter’s sixteen years follow, then Saturn’s nineteen and Mercury’s seventeen. A long Rahu period early in life can bring an unconventional childhood, early interest in technology or foreign cultures, or a feeling of being different from one’s surroundings.

Aquarius is Saturn’s sign, so Shatabhisha combines Rahu’s ambition and originality with Saturn’s discipline. Rahu’s house and aspects in the chart describe where this energy will be strongest. Check them in our free Kundli.

Shatabhisha Nakshatra padas

Pada 1: Aquarius 6°40′ to 10°00′ (Sagittarius Navamsa, ruled by Jupiter)

Jupiter brings optimism, philosophy and a wish to teach. These natives are often more outgoing than the other padas and drawn to law, education and spiritual inquiry. Name syllable: Go.

Pada 2: Aquarius 10°00′ to 13°20′ (Capricorn Navamsa, ruled by Saturn)

Saturn adds practicality and ambition. This pada suits structured careers in science, engineering, administration and business, and natives often succeed through persistent effort. Name syllable: Sa.

Pada 3: Aquarius 13°20′ to 16°40′ (Aquarius Navamsa, ruled by Saturn)

A Vargottama pada, with Aquarius in both the sign and the Navamsa. This is the most original and humanitarian pada, suited to technology, research, social reform and innovation. Name syllable: Si.

Pada 4: Aquarius 16°40′ to 20°00′ (Pisces Navamsa, ruled by Jupiter)

Pisces brings compassion, imagination and spiritual depth. This pada is strongly linked with healing and may draw natives to medicine, therapy, charity or spiritual practice. Name syllable: Su.

Career

  • Medicine, pharmacy, nursing and alternative healing
  • Scientific research, astronomy and physics
  • Information technology, electronics and telecom, through Rahu
  • Psychology, counselling and addiction recovery work
  • Marine work, shipping and water-related industries, through Varuna
  • Investigation, auditing and roles that uncover hidden information

Shatabhisha natives tend to do best with work that has depth and some independence. They often prefer to be valued for expertise rather than for social skills.

Love, marriage and compatibility

In relationships Shatabhisha natives are loyal and principled, but they need space and may be slow to show affection. They value a partner who is honest, intellectually engaging and comfortable with periods of quiet. Pushing for constant closeness can make them withdraw.

  • Yoni (4 points): the horse yoni scores highest with Ashwini, the male horse. The buffalo is the horse’s traditional enemy, so matches with Hasta and Swati lose points here.
  • Gana (6 points): as a Rakshasa Nakshatra, Shatabhisha matches easily with Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Chitra, Vishakha, Jyeshtha, Mula and Dhanishtha.
  • Nadi (8 points): Shatabhisha is Adi Nadi. A partner from another Adi Nadi Nakshatra (Ashwini, Ardra, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Jyeshtha, Mula or Purva Bhadrapada) creates Nadi Dosha. Ashwini therefore scores well on Yoni but brings Nadi Dosha, a good example of why no single kuta decides a match.

Health and wellbeing

Shatabhisha’s link with healing makes many natives health-conscious, and its Vata nadi suggests that regular routines, rest and calming practices are useful. Time alone to recharge is as important as physical care for this Nakshatra. Consult a qualified doctor for any health concern.

Using Shatabhisha Nakshatra for muhurta

Shatabhisha is a Chara (movable) Nakshatra and falls within Panchak, the five-Nakshatra period from the second half of Dhanishtha to Revati. Traditional uses include:

  • Starting a course of treatment, with medical advice
  • Travel (avoiding the south during Panchak)
  • Research and scientific work
  • Activities connected with water

Panchak traditionally restricts only a few activities, such as roofing and making a cot. Check the day’s Nakshatra and tithi for your city on our daily Panchang.

Remedies and supportive practices

  • Work with Rahu. Honesty, avoiding shortcuts and helping marginalised people are the classic ways to steady Rahu. The beej mantra is Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah.
  • Honour Varuna. Keeping one’s word, respecting water and offering water to the Sun connect with the deity. A short form is Om Varunaya Namah.
  • Shiva worship. Mahamrityunjaya mantra recitation is widely recommended for this healing Nakshatra.
  • Gemstones only after a chart check. Hessonite (gomed) is linked with Rahu; never wear it without a careful reading.

When the Moon transits Shatabhisha Nakshatra

Shatabhisha falls within Panchak and is a movable Nakshatra. Its day each month is traditionally used for starting a course of treatment (always with medical advice), research, scientific work and anything connected with water. Some people use it for quiet retreat and study.

Saturdays falling on Shatabhisha are sometimes chosen for Rahu-related prayers and for the Mahamrityunjaya mantra. Panchak restrictions on roofing, making a cot and travelling south still apply.

For your own birth star, the day the Moon returns to it is your Janma Tara. In Tara Bala, the system that compares the day’s Nakshatra with your birth Nakshatra, the Janma Tara is traditionally avoided for major new beginnings such as signing a large contract, although in South India the same day in your birth month is celebrated as your star birthday. You can check the day’s Nakshatra on our daily Panchang.
