Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra: Traits, Padas, Career, Marriage and Remedies

Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra symbol, the serpent Ahirbudhnya coiled in the glowing deep ocean

Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra means “the later auspicious feet”. It is the twenty-sixth Nakshatra and lies wholly in Pisces, marked by a star of the Great Square of Pegasus and the bright star Alpheratz in Andromeda. Its deity is Ahirbudhnya, the serpent of the deep waters, and its ruling planet is Saturn. In the south it is called Uthrattathi. Where Purva Bhadrapada burns, Uttara Bhadrapada settles: natives are often calm, wise beyond their years and able to hold steady when others panic.

This guide covers Ahirbudhnya, the symbols, men and women of the Nakshatra, its four padas, careers, compatibility, muhurta and remedies. These are tendencies that the full chart, especially Saturn and Jupiter, will shape.

Ahirbudhnya: the serpent of the depths

Ahirbudhnya, “the serpent of the depths”, appears in the Rig Veda alongside Aja Ekapada, the deity of the previous Nakshatra. Where Aja Ekapada is a pillar of fire reaching upward, Ahirbudhnya lies coiled at the bottom of the cosmic waters, holding the foundations of the world. Later tradition counts him among the eleven Rudras and links him with the kundalini, the coiled energy said to rest at the base of the spine.

This makes Uttara Bhadrapada a Nakshatra of depth and stored power. Natives often have a quiet strength that is not obvious at first. They tend to think before speaking, reflect deeply and keep their composure in difficult situations. The serpent of the depths also suggests hidden wisdom, and many natives are drawn to meditation, philosophy and spiritual practice, often maturing into people others seek out for advice.

What the symbols mean

The back legs of the funeral cot complete the image begun by Purva Bhadrapada. Where the earlier Nakshatra is the stage of letting go, Uttara Bhadrapada is the stage of rest and acceptance after the transition. It carries a sense of peace, detachment and readiness for what comes next.

The twin serpents, another symbol, suggest balance between two forces, often read as the balance of worldly duty and inner life. Uttara Bhadrapada natives tend to manage that balance well: they can be responsible in practical matters and still keep a strong inner world.

Personality

Strengths

  • Calm under pressure. They stay composed when others are anxious.
  • Wisdom. Saturn and Pisces give depth, patience and good judgment.
  • Compassion. They are often kind, charitable and supportive of those in need.
  • Discipline. Saturn gives the ability to work steadily towards long-term aims.
  • Spiritual depth. Many are drawn to meditation, scripture and inner practice.

Challenges

  • Inertia. Calm can become reluctance to act.
  • Withdrawal. They may retreat into themselves when life is difficult.
  • Over-giving. Compassion can lead them to sacrifice too much for others.
  • Hidden worries. They may keep concerns to themselves rather than share them.

Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra men and women

Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra men are traditionally described as wise, eloquent and attached to family, often respected for their good conduct and judgment. They tend to be generous and fair, and many achieve stability and recognition in the second half of life.

Uttara Bhadrapada women are described as graceful, caring and capable of carrying family responsibilities calmly, often valued as the steadying presence in a household. Many have strong spiritual interests and a talent for counselling or teaching. Both men and women of this Nakshatra usually value harmony over drama.

Saturn’s role and your first Mahadasha

Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra is ruled by Saturn, so natives begin life in the Saturn Mahadasha, which lasts nineteen years in full. Mercury’s seventeen years follow, then Ketu’s seven and Venus’s twenty. A long Saturn period early in life is often linked with early maturity, responsibility or a disciplined upbringing.

Saturn here sits in Pisces, Jupiter’s sign, which softens Saturn’s austerity with compassion and faith. That combination is a large part of the Nakshatra’s reputation for wisdom. Check Saturn’s placement and your Dasha balance in our free Kundli.

Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra padas

Pada 1: Pisces 3°20′ to 6°40′ (Leo Navamsa, ruled by the Sun)

Pada 2: Pisces 6°40′ to 10°00′ (Virgo Navamsa, ruled by Mercury)

Mercury brings practical intelligence and attention to detail. This pada suits medicine, research, accounting and service-oriented work. Name syllable: Tha.

Pada 3: Pisces 10°00′ to 13°20′ (Libra Navamsa, ruled by Venus)

Venus brings charm, artistic talent and a gift for relationships. These natives may be drawn to music, the arts, counselling and diplomacy. Name syllable: Jha.

Career

  • Counselling, psychology and spiritual guidance
  • Charity, non-profit work and social service
  • Research, academia and philosophy
  • Medicine, especially fields that need patience
  • Marine work and water-related industries, through Pisces
  • Administration and long-term projects, through Saturn

Uttara Bhadrapada natives tend to build careers steadily and are often trusted with responsibility because of their calm and fairness.

Love, marriage and compatibility

In relationships Uttara Bhadrapada natives are devoted, patient and supportive. They value emotional security and shared values, and they are often the steady partner who smooths over conflicts. They may need encouragement to express their own needs rather than only meeting others’.

  • Yoni (4 points): the cow yoni scores highest with Uttara Phalguni, the male cow. The tiger is the cow’s traditional enemy, so matches with Chitra and Vishakha lose points here.
  • Gana (6 points): as a Manushya Nakshatra, it matches easily with Bharani, Rohini, Ardra, the Phalgunis, the Ashadhas and Purva Bhadrapada.
  • Nadi (8 points): Uttara Bhadrapada is Madhya Nadi. A partner from another Madhya Nadi Nakshatra (Bharani, Mrigashira, Pushya, Purva Phalguni, Chitra, Anuradha, Purva Ashadha or Dhanishtha) creates Nadi Dosha.

Uttara Bhadrapada is one of the fixed Nakshatras traditionally favoured for weddings. See any couple’s full score with the Kundli matching tool.

Health and wellbeing

Pisces is traditionally linked with the feet, and Saturn with bones and long-term vitality. Regular movement, enough rest and not neglecting one’s own needs while caring for others are sensible habits. Consult a qualified doctor for any health concern.

Using Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra for muhurta

Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra belongs to the Dhruva (fixed) group with Rohini, Uttara Phalguni and Uttara Ashadha, and is considered good for lasting beginnings. It also falls within Panchak, which traditionally restricts only a few activities such as roofing and making a cot. Traditional uses include:

  • Weddings, subject to the rest of the Panchang
  • Laying foundations and entering a new home
  • Starting long-term spiritual practices
  • Investments and agreements meant to last

Remedies and supportive practices

  • Steady Saturn. Discipline, honesty and service to the elderly and the poor are the classic Saturn remedies. The beej mantra is Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaye Namah.
  • Honour Ahirbudhnya. Meditation, especially practices focused on steadiness and the breath, connects with the deity. A short form is Om Ahirbudhnyaya Namah.
  • Charity. Feeding the hungry and giving to spiritual or educational causes are widely recommended for this compassionate Nakshatra.
  • Gemstones only after a chart check. Blue sapphire is Saturn’s stone and must never be worn without a careful reading by a qualified astrologer.

When the Moon transits Uttara Bhadrapada Nakshatra

Uttara Bhadrapada is a fixed Nakshatra, so even though it falls within Panchak, its day each month is traditionally considered good for lasting beginnings such as weddings, foundations and starting a meditation practice, as long as the Panchak restrictions on roofing and making a cot are respected.

Saturdays falling on Uttara Bhadrapada are traditionally used for Saturn remedies and charity. The day suits calm reflection and long-term planning.

For your own birth star, the day the Moon returns to it is your Janma Tara. In Tara Bala, the system that compares the day’s Nakshatra with your birth Nakshatra, the Janma Tara is traditionally avoided for major new beginnings such as signing a large contract, although in South India the same day in your birth month is celebrated as your star birthday. You can check the day’s Nakshatra on our daily Panchang.
