Shravana Nakshatra: Traits, Padas, Career, Marriage and Remedies

Shravana Nakshatra symbol, a glowing ear and Vishnu's three footprints across the sky

Shravana Nakshatra means “hearing” or “listening”. It is the twenty-second Nakshatra and lies wholly in Capricorn, marked in the sky by the bright star Altair and its two companions. Its deity is Vishnu, the preserver, and its ruling planet is the Moon. In Kerala and Tamil Nadu it is known as Thiruvonam or Onam, the birth star of Vishnu in his Vamana form, and it gives its name to one of the most celebrated festivals of the year.

Shravana natives are often good listeners and quick learners, with a respect for tradition and a gift for passing on knowledge. This guide covers Vishnu’s role, the symbols, men and women of this Nakshatra, the four padas, careers, compatibility, muhurta and festivals. These are tendencies; the full chart decides the details.

Vishnu and the three steps

The best-known story behind Shravana is Vishnu’s avatar as Vamana, the dwarf. The asura king Mahabali, generous and powerful, had conquered the three worlds. Vamana came to his sacrifice and asked for as much land as he could cover in three steps. When Bali agreed, Vamana grew into Trivikrama, the cosmic form, covered the earth and the heavens in two strides, and with the third step pressed Bali down to the underworld. Moved by Bali’s devotion, Vishnu granted him the right to visit his people once a year, and Onam celebrates that visit.

The three footprints, one of Shravana’s symbols, come from this story. They stand for the ordered movement of the cosmos and for the idea that great things can come from humble beginnings. Vishnu as preserver also gives Shravana a protective, conserving quality: natives often want to keep what is good, maintain traditions and look after people.

What the ear means

The ear points to Shravana’s central gift: listening. In Indian tradition, knowledge was passed on orally, and the Vedas are called Shruti, “that which is heard”. Shravana Nakshatra is therefore linked with learning, teaching and the careful transmission of knowledge. Natives often learn best by listening, remember what they hear and are trusted with confidences.

Listening also means paying attention to people. Shravana natives are often good counsellors, mediators and friends because they hear what others are really saying. The challenge is that they may also hear too much: gossip, criticism or worries that are not theirs to carry. Learning what to filter out is part of their growth.

Personality

Strengths

  • Attentive listening. Shravana natives understand people and situations by paying close attention.
  • Learning ability. They absorb knowledge well, especially through listening and study.
  • Respect for tradition. They value family, culture and established ways of doing things.
  • Organisation. Capricorn adds discipline and practical planning.
  • Helpfulness. Vishnu’s protective nature makes them willing to support others.

Challenges

  • Sensitivity to criticism. The Moon makes them take words to heart.
  • Rigidity. Respect for tradition can become resistance to change.
  • Worry. Hearing everything can lead to anxiety.
  • Need for reputation. They can care a great deal about what others say about them.

Shravana Nakshatra men and women

Shravana Nakshatra men are traditionally described as learned, respectful and well mannered, often generous and attached to their families. They may rise through knowledge and good conduct rather than force, and many are drawn to teaching, advisory roles or religious life.

Shravana women are described as intelligent, well organised and good at communication, often skilled in languages, music or teaching. They tend to be supportive of family and community, and many are successful in professions that need careful listening and patience. Both men and women of this Nakshatra usually value a good reputation.

The Moon’s role and your first Mahadasha

Shravana Nakshatra is ruled by the Moon, so natives begin life in the Moon Mahadasha, whose full length is ten years. Mars’s seven years follow, then Rahu’s eighteen, Jupiter’s sixteen and Saturn’s nineteen. The Moon’s influence gives Shravana its emotional sensitivity, its receptiveness and its strong link with the mother.

Because the Moon sits in Capricorn here, a Saturn sign, Shravana combines feeling with discipline. A strong Moon gives calm and confidence; a weak Moon can bring worry. See your Moon’s placement and Dasha balance in our free Kundli.

Shravana Nakshatra padas

Pada 1: Capricorn 10°00′ to 13°20′ (Aries Navamsa, ruled by Mars)

Mars adds energy and ambition. These natives are more active and outspoken than the other padas and often pursue goals with determination. Business, engineering and leadership suit them. Name syllable: Ju (or Khi).

Pada 2: Capricorn 13°20′ to 16°40′ (Taurus Navamsa, ruled by Venus)

Venus brings stability, taste and a love of comfort. These natives are often good with money and may be drawn to the arts, finance or hospitality. Name syllable: Je (or Khu).

Pada 3: Capricorn 16°40′ to 20°00′ (Gemini Navamsa, ruled by Mercury)

Mercury strengthens Shravana’s link with learning and communication. This pada suits teaching, writing, broadcasting, languages and research. Name syllable: Jo (or Khe).

Pada 4: Capricorn 20°00′ to 23°20′ (Cancer Navamsa, ruled by the Moon)

The Moon rules both the Nakshatra and the Navamsa, making this pada the most emotional and caring. It suits nursing, counselling, hospitality and family businesses. Name syllable: Gha (or Kho).

Career

  • Teaching, academia and training
  • Counselling, psychology and social work
  • Languages, translation, radio, podcasting and music
  • Administration and government service, through Capricorn
  • Travel and transport, since Shravana is a movable Nakshatra
  • Religious and cultural organisations, through Vishnu

Shravana natives tend to do well where knowledge and trust are valued. They often build careers through steady learning and good relationships with mentors.

Love, marriage and compatibility

In relationships, Shravana Nakshatra natives are attentive and supportive, and they want a partner who listens as well as they do. They value loyalty, shared values and family harmony. They may be hurt easily by careless words, so a partner who communicates kindly suits them best.

  • Yoni (4 points): the monkey yoni scores highest with Purva Ashadha, the male monkey. The sheep is the monkey’s traditional enemy, so matches with Krittika and Pushya lose points here.
  • Gana (6 points): as a Deva Nakshatra, Shravana matches well with Ashwini, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Pushya, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha and Revati.
  • Nadi (8 points): Shravana is Antya Nadi. A partner from another Antya Nadi Nakshatra (Krittika, Rohini, Ashlesha, Magha, Swati, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha or Revati) creates Nadi Dosha.

Health and wellbeing

The ear symbol connects Shravana, in traditional thinking, with hearing and the ears. More practically, a sensitive Moon in a hardworking sign benefits from quiet time, enough sleep and limits on worry. Consult a qualified doctor for any health concern.

Using Shravana Nakshatra for muhurta

Shravana is a Chara (movable) Nakshatra and is also considered one of the more auspicious Nakshatras overall. Traditional uses include:

  • Starting education, learning a new subject or beginning Vedic study
  • Travel and moving house
  • Buying vehicles
  • Religious ceremonies and Vishnu worship

Combine it with the tithi, weekday and yoga. See them for your city on our daily Panchang.

Remedies and supportive practices

  • Strengthen the Moon. Rest, time near water and care for one’s mother are traditional Moon remedies. The beej mantra is Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah.
  • Worship Vishnu. Reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama or Om Namo Narayanaya is the most widely recommended practice for Shravana natives.
  • Listen with care. Practising mindful listening and avoiding gossip is a simple way to work with the ear symbol.
  • Gemstones only after a chart check. Pearl is the Moon’s stone; ask a qualified astrologer first.

Shravana in the calendar

Onam, Kerala’s harvest festival, reaches its peak on Thiruvonam, the day the Moon is in Shravana in the month of Chingam, after ten days of celebration that begin on Atham (Hasta). The lunar month of Shravana, in July and August, takes its name from this Nakshatra, and its full Moon is Raksha Bandhan. The month is also sacred to Shiva, with Shravan Somvar fasts kept on Mondays. The Sun passes through Shravana from late January to early February.

When the Moon transits Shravana Nakshatra

Shravana is one of the most widely favoured Nakshatras for learning. The day each month when the Moon is here is traditionally chosen for starting school or a new course, beginning Vedic study, listening to discourses and starting a journey. Many Vishnu temples hold special worship on Shravana days, and some devotees fast on them.

Mondays falling on Shravana are considered good for Moon remedies. It is also a good day simply to listen: to a mentor, to family, or to music.

For your own birth star, the day the Moon returns to it is your Janma Tara. In Tara Bala, the system that compares the day’s Nakshatra with your birth Nakshatra, the Janma Tara is traditionally avoided for major new beginnings such as signing a large contract, although in South India the same day in your birth month is celebrated as your star birthday. You can check the day’s Nakshatra on our daily Panchang.
